The One and Only God is Triune

When Jesus was about to ascend into heaven, he asked his apostles to baptise in the name of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19).

Jesus asked us to baptise in the one name of the one God. He doesn’t say ‘in the names’ (plural) of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Nor does he say: “in the name of the Father and the name of the Son and the name of the Spirit” which would imply three separate beings.

This one God, is a single being in three persons, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus doesn’t say ‘in the name of Father, Son, Holy Spirit’ as if each are different faces of God. He speaks of them as persons with the definite article.

When Jesus gave his apostles their marching orders, he told them to worship and serve in the name of the one God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. May we ever love and worship the one and only Triune God!

The Holy Spirit – Given to Glorify Christ

The best starting place in Scripture to learn of the work and role of the Holy Spirit is in John 14-16. This upper room discourse contains critical teaching of Jesus the night before he died.

Life in the Holy Spirit has many important aspects. However the most important aspect is this: Jesus said that the Holy Spirit will “testify about me” (John 15:26). A bit later he says the role of the Holy Spirit will be to glorify Jesus (John 16:14).

A person who is filled with the Spirit is someone who sees and cherishes Jesus Christ as Lord. When Jesus is glorified and lifted up, there you can be sure that the Holy Spirit is present in strong measure.

In dealing with the Corinthian confusion about the work of the Spirit – the apostle’s starting point was: “No-one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:3). This is making the same point as John’s gospel – the work of the Spirit is to awaken and draw attention to the glory of Jesus Christ. The best way to honour the Holy Spirit is not by focusing on the Spirit himself but by glorifying Jesus Christ.

Grace – Amazing and Sweet Sounding

Today we look at the doctrine of “grace” – God’s gift of undeserved mercy offered in Jesus.

Grace is a subversive, life changing truth. Here are some key quotes on grace:

“For all have sinned  and fall short of the glory of God,  and are justified  freely by his grace  through the redemption  that came by Christ Jesus” Romans 3:23-24

“So too, at the present time there is a remnant  chosen by grace.  And if by grace, then it is no longer by works;  if it were, grace would no longer be grace” Romans 11:5-6

“As God’s fellow workers we urge you not to receive God’s  grace  in vain.” 2 Corinthians 6:1

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

“And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” Ephesians 2:6-8

Is grace sweet sounding to you? May God ever amaze us by his grace!

Mother’s Day 2012 – Praise God for our Mothers

We take today to celebrate and affirm God’s gift of our mothers. God has not designed humans to be solitary but to live in communities of love. “God sets the lonely in families” (Psalm 68:6).

Motherhood is also painful. To those who have broken relationships with their mothers, we pray for reconciliation. To those who long for the gift of becoming a mother, we pray for trust, patience and for God to provide. To those mothers whose children are lost to the world, we pray for their conversion and salvation.

We thank God for the gutsy sacrificial women who have carried us, fed us, sweated for us and patiently served us for decades. They reflect the glory of the sacrifice of our King and God, the Lord Jesus.

Compassion Sunday 2012

One of the link-mission agencies that BAC supports financially and prayerfully is Compassion. The mission of Compassion Australia is: “To challenge, partner and equip the Church to release children from spiritual, economic, social, physical and emotional poverty in Jesus’ name”. Compassion is “Christ-centred, child-focused and church-based”.

There are many agencies that work to alleviate poverty around the world, and the desperate needs demand a diversity of approaches. One distinctive of Compassion is that they are explicitly Christian and unembarrassed about Jesus. Rather than “secularise” their ministry for the sake of government funding, they fundraise from generous Christians and partner with local churches to meet both physical and spiritual needs.

The best way to get involved with Compassion is to sponsor a child. You will be able to exchange letters and encourage your sponsor child spiritually as well as physically. Today we have a table where you can find the details about child sponsorship. Please pray that Compassion will be used by God to address both temporal and eternal suffering.
